XML (Extensible Markup Language) is simply built to carry data and text. Unlike HTML, XML file won’t display data but carries data into the file itself. Mind you, XML files are uneasy to understand and many people are not familiar with editing the file.

Step 1: Locate the XML file

In the beginning, we will just open the XML file in order to edit it later.

1. Just navigate yourself to the XML file location that you want to edit, and remember the file name.
2. Now press Windows + R key to open the Run command. Or you can simply do a right-click on the Windows icon and select Run from the list of options.
3. When the Run window appears, you need to type the XML’s file name and press OK.
4. Your system will analyze the XML file location and show results in the next window.

Step 2: Open the XML file

1. When your system will show the result, just scroll down and locate your XML file.
2. Now, do a right-click on the file location link and select to choose “Open With” from dropbox.
3. Select “Notepad” in order to view the content present in the file.
4. Make sure not to close Windows Explorer while the content is displayed in the coding language.

Step 3: Editing the XML file

Now that you have opened the XML file, it’s time to edit it. You can make the changed in the XML file content according to your preference. Here, we suggest you not move any arrows, asterisks, punctuations, etc as it will just mess up the whole content present in the XML file. Head towards the next step as soon as you finish editing an XML file.

Step 4: Saving the XML file

After you finished editing the XML file we need to save it. Here’s how to do that:

1. Click on the “File” tab located at the tab menu icon.
2. Select “Save As” and save the edited XML file to your desired location. (Make sure to save it to the different location in order to avoid override or replace it with the existing document).
3. Select OK to save the XML file.

Furthermore, you can override your edited XML file with the original file. This will remove the original file and replaced it with the edited ones. Just move the edited XML file location to the original file, your system will ask permission to do so. Allow the process to finish then your system will pop up a screen notification of override status.

Things to be Remember

1. In case there are no Notepad settings selected in your system, then select the “Open With” option and browse to select the Notepad.
2. Not every XML file is represented in “.xml”, it can also be represented in “.dll” file extension.
3. Remember the file name, this will help you to analyze the original and edited file, rename the file if necessary.
4. Try to save the edited XML file into the desktop, this will not confuse you with the original XML file.
5. Avoid saving the opened XML file in the current document, as these XML files are not meant to be edited.
