iCloud Photos and Google Photos allow you to store the photos captured by you on the respective cloud. However, if you’re an Apple user, iCloud will provide you 5GB of free space which is less as compared to Google Photos as it provides 15GB of free space. Most of the users already switched to Google Photos due to the less storage disadvantage of iCloud.

How to Move Photos from iCloud Photos to Google Photos

Mind you, this process may take hours, days, or even weeks depending on the size of your photos and your internet speed. Follow the steps mentioned below to transfer or move the photos from iCloud Photos to Google Photos.

Step 1: Download Google Photos on your device

Simply, download the Google Photos app on your mobile device. On the other hand, download the Backup and Sync app on Mac or PC. Here, a computer might have the slight advantage of a stronger Wi-Fi connection. So, download the app only on one device.

Step 2: Enable Backup & Sync and select your photos storage size

Once the app is downloaded, let the Google Photos or Backup and Sync access your photos. In simple words, the app will make a copy of your photos on iCloud. Just enable or turn on Backup & Sync then you can choose to upload photos and videos in high-quality keeping in mind that you only have 15GB of free space.

You can also choose to use mobile data when there’s no Wi-Fi option. But only enable the option unless you have access to unlimited cellular data. Now, tap on confirm.

Step 3: Let Google Photos to finish backing up all your photos

Now, the only thing we can do is to wait for Google Photos to finish backing up all your photos. As mentioned above, it may take hours, days, or weeks to move the photos on Google Photos. You can track the progress of backup by the Google Photos app itself. While for the Backup and Sync app on Mac or PC click on the icon present in your menu bar to see the progress.

Remember, you don’t need to download your photos from iCloud Photos to move into Google Photos.

Step 4: Check if some photos are missed

Now, once all of your photos transferred to Google Photos just check that you’ve not missed any of your photos. Just check the first and the last photos from your library to make sure that every photo is moved. Or just check a number of photos in iCloud Photos match to the Google Photos, if there’s no problem move to the next step.

Step 5: Download local backup of iCloud Photos (Optional)

Now, this is step is optional but let me tell you this is the only chance to have a copy of the originals from iCloud. You can save them on your computer. First, visit iCloud’s websites and select the photos in bulk, and click on the download button.

Step 6: Turn off iCloud Photos on your device

Once your photos are moved to Google Photos from iCloud photos, and also a local backup is created on your computer. There’s no need for iCloud Photos as it will consume the space of iCloud storage. Just delete all photos and videos that are no longer needed.

Note: Turning off iCloud Photos from the device setting will remove photos and videos from your device but won’t delete them from iCloud storage.

Just delete one photo to ensure that the same photo is not deleted from Google Photos, as it has happened to many users. If Google Photos is unaffected by whatever photo you delete, then just delete everything from the Photos app to clear iCloud Photos. Just visit settings and turn off iCloud Photos new photos aren’t saved to iCloud again.
