What is DM-Verity?

According to android.com:

Potentially Harmful Applications (PHAs) with root privileges can hide from detection programs and otherwise mask themselves. The rooting software can do this because it is often more privileged than the detectors, enabling the software to “lie” to the detection programs.

The dm-verity feature lets you look at a block device, the underlying storage layer of the file system, and determine if it matches its expected configuration. It does this using a cryptographic hash tree. For every block (typically 4k), there is a SHA256 hash.

In layman terms, Device Mapper Verity (also known as dm-verity) is a security mechanism built into Android to prevent persistent rootkits that can hold onto root privileges and compromise devices.

Make no mistake, this is a very good feature which will help make your device more secure.

While this may not be a problem for normal users, advanced users who try out custom ROMs and MODs and those who root their device for several other reasons, this could get annoying. Which leads to the question…

Is it safe to DM-Verity warning?

Yes – only if you know what you are doing and are confident about it. If you are 100% sure that what you are doing will in no way harm your device, then go ahead. Rooting your device, installing a custom recovery/kernel/ROM are some of the reasons why this warning appears.

On the other hand, if you have not done any of the above and also not really sure what caused the message to appear, then it is probably not a good idea to disable it. Rather, immediately restore your device to stock.
