Discord is a freeware Voice over IP (VoIP) application mainly designed to communicate in text, image, video audio communication between two or more users in a channel. In fact, you can even send GIFs and emojis on a chat.
However, many users are unaware of the most useful feature on Discord, i.e, Markdown formatting. This feature enables users to format their messages in italic, bold, and code formatting. With Discord Markdown, users can also indicate a “spoiler alert!”
In this article, we will look at how to make a spoiler tag in Discord.
How to Make a Spoiler Tag in Discord
Creating a spoiler tag in Discord is way simpler than you can’t even imagine. For instance, you have to type your message or phrase and surround it with two bars on both sides. The representation of these bars is ||, which can be entered by || key.
These bars will make sure that your phrase is hidden inside a spoiler tag. To reveal the information, users have to click that spoiler tag. In technical terms, especially developers, these bars are known as “pipe symbols.”
So, if you put any message inside these two pipes, then the users will be able to see the information only when they click on the message to expand and read whatever it says.
The feature is very useful to those users who haven’t seen the series or movies for which the spoiler has been sent. At that time, those users can refrain from clicking the spoiler message.
With spoiler tags, you can make an individual part of the message or the entire message as a spoiler. The quickest way to make your message as a spoiler is by selecting the part of the message, and then clicking on the “Eye” shape icon.
Once you mark it as a spoiler, you will see that the selected message is surrounded by the two bars from both sides.
Another way of creating a spoiler is by typing “/spoiler” before the message.
You can even mark attachments as spoilers. For doing so, you have to upload your attachment, and then select the “Mark as spoiler” checkbox before you click on “Upload”.
The attachment spoiler will look like this to other users in chat.
To mark links as spoilers, you have to just place two bars in front and back of the URL.
The process of marking text as spoilers on mobile is the same as that on desktop. Whether it’s a text, an image or embedded links, you have to surround your phrase from both sides.
On iOS, you can mark phrases as spoilers by selecting the text in the text box and then long-press the selected text to open the context menu. Once you select the text, click on “Mark as spoiler”.
Now, you can easily create spoiler tags in Discord. Although, there are other Markdown tags also present in Discord which helps you to format your text.
- Bold: **phrase**
- Italics: *phrase*
- Underline: _phrase_
- Bold Italics: ***phrase***
- Underline Bold: _**phrase**_
- Underline Bold Italics: _***phrase***_
- Strikethrough: ~~phrase~~
You can also use Markdown symbols in your text, in case, you don’t want to use Markdown. To use Markup symbols, you will have to place a backslash at the start of the phrase. In that way, you can use asterisks and other Markdown symbols.
Note: You have to remember that the backslash doesn’t work in messages that have underscores.
In today’s world, Markdown is considered a standard formatting language. Markdown is easy to use and it is easier to understand as compared to other markup languages.
Inline Code and Blocks of Code
Discord also supports code blocks and to get started with inline code, you will have to just wrap your text in backtick (`).
Interestingly, you can create a code block with more than one line by putting three backticks at the beginning and then after the block of code. The method of creating code blocks for multiple lines is also known as a code fence.
How to Change Showing Feature of Spoiler Tag in Discord
If you want to turn off the spoiler tag feature in Discord, then you can do it easily. Go to User Settings > Text & Images.
- On Click: Spoiler tag can only be seen when you click on that message.
- On the server I moderate: Here, moderate means you have been assigned a role with “Manage Messages” enabled.
- Always: You don’t have to click on the message, instead, the spoiler messages will be directly visible.
Note: Currently, you can only change the “Show Spoiler Content” feature on desktop/browser.
Discord is now one of the most used platforms among the gamer’s community. Its voice chat, video call, and screen sharing features are loved the most by the users. When you use Discord, it feels like you’re sitting in the same room.
