In this guide, we will show you how to install TWRP your Samsung Galaxy Smartphone or tablet. Once you install TWRP on your Samsung Galaxy, you can root it with magisk, install custom ROMs, and Mods on it to customize your device the way you like it.
Please note that the below method will not work on modern Samsung devices such as Galaxy S10, Note 10. Should work fine on all the device prior to 2019.
Steps to Unlock Bootloader on Samsung Galaxy
Step 1. Backup your Samsung device
The process of installing TWRP on your Samsung device will totally wipe any data you have on your device. All your data such as apps, media, app data, documents – everything will be deleted permanently. To put it shortly, this will factory reset your device.

Step 2. Download TWRP Recovery for your Samsung Galaxy
- In order to download TWRP for your device, you first need to visit the official TWRP Website here: Download TWRP for Samsung
- Search for your device and click on it.
- Scroll download till you find the ‘Download Links’ section and click on any location you wish.
- On the next page, you need to download the file which has the extension ‘.tar‘.
- You will be directed to the download page where you would need to click on the download link again.
- Done.
Step 3. Reboot your device into Download Mode
You can easily reboot your device into download mode using a key combination. But unfortunately, the key combination for this varies from one Samsung device to another. But nothing a quick Google search can’t solve. You can simply search for ‘Samsung Galaxy [Your Device Name] Download Mode’ to find out the answer for this.
Step 4. Flash TWRP with Odin
- Download the latest version of Odin from here: Download Odin
- Extract the downloaded zip file and double click on Odin.exe file.
- Connect your Samsung Galaxy Device which is in Download Mode to your computer using USB Cable.
- Odin will now detect your device and show it as shown in the below screenshot:
- Click on the AP button (or the PDA button, if you are using a mac) and select the downloaded tar file. The tar file should now be loaded into Odin.
- Next, go to the ‘Options‘ section uncheck the ‘Auto Reboot‘ option.
- Click on the ‘START’ button and wait for the process to complete.
- Once the process is complete, you will see the ‘PASS‘ sign on Odin Tool.
- Once the process completes, you can turn off your device. Volume Down + Power Button should work on most devices.
Step 5. Setup TWRP Recovery
Now, boot your device into recovery mode (the key combination for this varies from one Samsung device to another; Google is your friend).
- You will be greeted with the below screen. Check the ‘Never show this screen during boot again‘ box and swipe the slider at the bottom.
- Once you are in TWRP Recovery, click on ‘Wipe‘ and then tap on ‘Format Data‘ at the bottom right. This is to make sure to disable the encryption on your device.
- Next, to make sure that your device does not gets into bootloop, you need to flash a file called ‘no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0.zip‘ on your device. You can download it here.
- Once you download it, copy it to your Samsung Galaxy.
- In TWRP, tap on ‘Install’ and choose the zip file which you have copied and flash the same.
- Once the flashing completes, reboot your Android device.
- Done!
