Discord is a free VoIP application that was introduced for gamers all around the world. Initially, you were not able to quote someone when compared to other platforms like Slack and other professional chatting apps.

We have to first understand that Discord was never meant to be used by business professionals. However, if you can quote someone on the app, it will be easier for you to reply to what someone has said. Additionally, it also helps to highlight the critical messages during the conversation.

Discord is our primary application for chatting and video calling. And, it was frustrating to not have the option to quote other messages. For a long time, users have to use code blocks or chatbots.

Recently, Discord released an update that has a built-in feature of quoting others on the app.

Discord allows you to quote users on all platforms including desktop, iOS, and Android with the same methods.

Although multi-line quotes are slightly different on the desktop when compared to mobile apps, but the process is exactly the same.

In this article, we will discuss how the quoting feature works on the Discord app.

Single-Line Quotes

The single-line quote is used when you want to quote something that uses only a single line of text. There are no line breaks or paragraphs within the message.

To quote a single-line, type “>” symbol followed by a space and then your quote.

Multi-Lines Quote

The multi-lines quote is used when you want to quote something that uses more than a single line of text (like paragraphs) or there are some line breaks.

To quote a multi-line, type “>” symbol followed by a space in front of every new paragraph that you want to quote. But, it is a time-consuming process if you want to add a high number of paragraphs within a quote.

There’s another way of quoting someone as multi-line, type “>>>” followed by a space at the beginning of a line of text. This will make the entire message as a part of the quote. The only way to exit such a quote is to backspace the “>>>” symbol and use “>” symbol.

As I mentioned earlier that multi-line quotes work differently in the desktop apps, that’s because  “>” and “>>>” both do multi-line quoting by default. To make it a single-line quote, press “Enter” and then “Backspace” to go back to normal text.

Use Code Blocks

Before the block quotes released by Discord, users who want to quote someone have to use code blocks. Although this method still works and is one of the best alternatives to block quotes.

Creating a code block is way simpler and you can create one by wrapping your text in a single backtick (`) or triple backticks (“`).

For a single-line quote, use a single backtick (`) at the beginning and end of a sentence.

For a multi-line quote, use the triple backtick (“`) at the beginning and end of a sentence.

Blockquotes and Code blocks, both are capable of quoting someone on Discord. So, it’s up to you which method you want to use while quoting. I will say try both the methods and see which one is more suitable for you.

Using A Quote Bot

You can also use bots to quote someone. There are some Github projects that provide the complete functionality of quoting others on Discord.

You have to first download and install the projects on your desktop. Below are the two bots that you can use.
