On Discord, a role is defined by the admin of the group with a set of different permissions with a name. For instance, there is a role called @everyone, it gives a variety of different permissions to the users, mostly the basic ones like replying on the server and reading the messages or sending simple texts and media.
The admin of the server can create a role called Moderator who will be having a few responsibilities like he can mute or banning other users from that server. So, to sum it up if a user of a server is a moderator, then that user will have powers or access of everyone plus the powers of the Moderator.
